When you visit Big Thicket Hearing Aids & Audiology, we like to to put you at your ease. We want you to feel comfortable with the process of a hearing test so that you can get the right solution for your hearing loss and start to enjoy life again.

One of the ways that we do this is to offer you as much information as possible about what will happen during your visit. Though everyone has a slightly different process based on their individual needs, there are some things that apply to everyone.

Step 1 – Questions

The first step is to start to get to know your needs. This means asking you several questions to determine why you have come to visit us and what might be causing any hearing loss you are experiencing.

Your appointment will be with our founder and Doctor of Audiology, Dr. Joni Ruiz, who has many years’ experience in diagnostics and has worked for some of the most prestigious ENT clinics in Texas.

There are lots of different reasons why someone might notice problems wth their hearing. Some of these are related to a blockage or illness, whereas others might be due to your genes or simply the ageing process. We will work out the cause, so we can find the best solution.

It’s not just a case of losing your hearing and getting something that makes sounds louder for you. Many hearing disorders can be treated and improved in the long run.

Step 2 – The Hearing Test

Once we have all the information we need, you will move on to the testing part of your visit. This will all be explained to you in detail on the day, but here’s a quick overview.

You will enter a booth which is designed to minimize interference from outside noises. You will be asked to place on a set of headphones that will play various sounds at different pitches and volumes to establish your hearing range. When you hear them, you will be asked to push a button or raise your hand. We do things a little differently for very young kids and for people wearing hearing aids or who have cochlear implants.

Step 3 – Analysis

And finally, we get to the bit you’ve been waiting for: the results. There’s no waiting; we get the results soon after your test and can begin to explain what they mean to you. In some cases, the issue might not be clear straight away and you might need further tests. However, we will certainly have gathered plenty of information on the potential ways in which we can help you to hear more clearly.
